Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
